Plan B is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, preferably within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours.
Plan B is a time-sensitive medication. Treatment of Plan B should never be delayed as efficacy declines with time or if taken after 48 hours after intercourse. After a single act of unprotected sex the treatment fails in about 2% of the time if taken within 72 hours after sex.
Plan B is secreted into breast milk, so breastfeeding should be avoided within 6 hours of taking the pill. If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor for advice.
Plan B should be avoided during pregnancy. Plan B will not work if you are already pregnant, as it cannot dislodge an implanted embryo.
Plan B is believed act to prevent ovulation, fertilisation and implantation. It is not effective once the process of implantation has begun. Depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, Plan B will either stop the release of an egg, prevent fertilisation of an egg or a stop a fertilised egg from becoming attached to your uterus. Once this has happened Plan B will no longer be effective.
